Steering Committees

XBRL US member volunteers are the driving force helping to set the strategic direction of the organization.  All members have the opportunity to join one of the primary steering committees:  the Communication and Services Steering Committee or the Domain Steering Committee.  Committees are elected annually through a vote by member organizations.  Each steering committee may also establish working groups for a specific activity.

XBRL US is currently governed by a Board of Directors, with annual nominations and voting by XBRL US member companies.

Communications & Services Steering Committee

Members of the Communication & Services Steering Committee bring their strategic marketing and communications expertise to help develop and convey the message of the organization. The mission of the committee is to facilitate the adoption of XBRL by the business reporting supply chain by engaging members and the public at large in efforts to increase the relevance of XBRL and build community among a diverse audience.

  • Domain Steering Committee

Drawing upon the collective knowledge and domain expertise of the XBRL US community, the Domain Steering Committee's primary goal is to oversee the development of taxonomies to meet the business reporting needs of key markets in the United States.

Building a taxonomy involves bringing together domain experts to define terms or concepts used for business reporting, and then structuring that information in an XBRL-compliant fashion to create a digital dictionary in XBRL. The blend of accounting/finance and technical XBRL expertise is one of the keys to the success of the Domain Steering Committee.

Responsibilities of the Domain Steering Committee include reviewing and establishing the business requirements for the XBRL specification, participating in the development of global taxonomy architecture best practices, and participating in the development of taxonomy development and approval processes.
